01. Multi-stakeholder conference - Digital product passport
The Digital Product Passport will become an integral part of reporting in the coming years. The special feature of the Digital Product Passport is its cross-industry and cross-sector nature. It is therefore essential that information is also exchanged across industries and sectors. To this end, the VDMA's multi-stakeholder forum on the Digital Product Passport was established.

The Digital Product Passport will be an integral part of reporting in the coming years. The special feature of the Digital Product Passport is its cross-industry and cross-sector nature.
The first mention and integration of a DPP is found in the Battery Regulation; the Ecodesign Regulation provides the corresponding draft for a DPP concept. Many other regulations have now adopted the Digital Product Passport as an integral part of reporting.
The background system of the Digital Product Passport (DPP system for short) is based on and defined by harmonized European standards. The content of the Digital Product Passport (DPP data for short) is defined by delegated acts under the Ecodesign Regulation or by the associated product regulations.
These DPP system standards do not specify a concrete, specific solution. They merely provide a framework for creating the required system. As a result, the DPP system offers design options in the form of different technologies and compositions. At the same time, the required content from the delegated acts and product regulations will differ in scope and form depending on the economic sectors addressed.
Many of the economic sectors already affected have developed and evolved completely independently of each other over the past decades of digitalization. Nevertheless, the DPP concept stipulates complete interoperability for a continuous flow of information.
It is clear that, depending on the economic sector, the challenges in terms of implementation, depth, and complexity vary considerably in some cases. These challenges, in turn, give rise to different considerations for possible approaches, which in some cases can only be followed to a limited extent for the various industries and sectors.
In order to keep this diversity of considerations clear, transparent, and comprehensible, it is imperative that the various interest groups involved, including associations, institutions, and initiatives, come together and exchange ideas.
In this context, the VDMA invites you to participate in the cross-sector multi-stakeholder forum on the digital product passport.
Impact on the respective sector/industry
- Extent of digitization
- Barriers to implementing the DPP or the DPP system
