The widespread industrial use of additive manufacturing depends crucially on manufacturing systems reliably delivering parts of consistently high quality. While closed control loops are still in their infancy, the early detection of defects directly in the process is currently a key issue for industry and research. Infrared-based measurements in particular are becoming increasingly important, as they provide important information about the melt pool and the surrounding environment. In this presentation, Gustavo Reis will share Fraunhofer IPK's latest experiences with in-situ monitoring in powder bed-based laser beam melting of metals.

Gustavo Reis de Ascencao holds a master's degree in production engineering from RWTH Aachen University and has experience in various manufacturing processes, including micro-machining, robot-assisted machining, and additive manufacturing. Since 2019, he has been working as a research associate at Fraunhofer IPK, focusing on quality assurance in laser powder bed fusion and international business development.
