HOLZ‑HER Maschinenbau GmbH is a long-established specialist in woodworking machinery. Founded in 1914 by Karl Matthias Reich in Nürtingen (Baden-Württemberg), the company has developed into one of the technology leaders in its field. Key milestones include the market launch of the first edge banding machines featuring revolutionary nozzle technology in 1969, the development of proprietary CNC machining centres in 1993, and the company’s integration into the WEINIG Group in 2010. Within this group structure, HOLZ‑HER continues to operate as an independent brand focused on wood-based panel processing. The company’s headquarters and administrative functions are located in Nürtingen, while machine production has been based in Voitsberg, Austria, since 1964.
The production site in Voitsberg exemplifies a core Lean Management challenge: high product variety within clearly defined series-based production concepts. The plant describes its production approach as “series-oriented variant manufacturing”, enabled by the modular design of its machines and an order-driven production model. At the same time, material and information flows are supported by a purpose-built intralogistics system that optimises workflows and provides the flexibility required to respond to market and customer demands. In recent years, the site has also been strategically expanded, including the addition of a new assembly hall, a highly automated warehouse and a fundamentally redesigned logistics concept. These measures ensure just-in-time parts and material supply and further enhance overall production flow efficiency.
For Lean practitioners, this creates a highly relevant real-world case: how can a machinery manufacturer combine standardisation and short lead times with customer-specific configuration—without increasing inventories, transport routes or interface losses? At HOLZ‑HER, you will gain first-hand insights into these questions, including a company introduction by Managing Director Harald Steiner, an in-depth technical session led by Christian Mitteregger (Head of Industrial Engineering), a guided factory tour, and an interactive workshop with peer-to-peer feedback.
